What's That? Football's Over?
Topic: SEC Sports Rule

Well, well, well...I guess all the sports pundits are eating their words right about now with LSU firmly atop the NCAA Football standings.

Year after year, the SEC produces a conference with such depth and talent. Finally, this year, with the exception of two losses (Florida and Arkansas) during bowl season the sports world will have to take notice. The SEC had the most teams selected for bowl participation this year as well and were able to out perform the other conferences by a 7 to 2 margin. Many of the teams winning by more than one touchdown.

However, let's take a look at those two losses, first up, Arkansas. Truth be told, they should have never been playing Missouri. Missouri should have been in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. Might that have changed the outcome of that game? Perhaps, but it would have been a much more evenly matched game and would have given Hawaii the opportunity to match up with Arkansas making THAT a better game as well. As for the Florida game, well, I'm a little disappointed in the Gators, but with all the emotion surrounding Michigan, it isn't that surprising that they were able to pull off the upset and reclaim a season that began so dismally.

The 2007 football season is finally over and it was certainly a banner year for the SEC...let's hope basketball season follows suit.

To Curse or Not To Curse...
Topic: Crap I Don't Understand

So, a number of my friends have recently begun a quest to limit the amount of foul language they use on a daily basis. While I agree that this kind of language can sometimes make you appear less intelligent than you would like, I have to say that I wholeheartedly disagree with the idea that we should limit ourselves in this manner.

Here's why...

I am all about working to improve your language skills - I have been the recipient of the word of the day emails from two dictionaries for over 5 years; however, totally eliminating cursing is a bandwagon I don't think I can get on - at least not in everyday conversation - perhaps in the workplace, but then aren't we most likely in need of such language at work anyway?

Think about it for a second, the real challenge is living your life so that you don't need to use any kind of expletive at all, whether that expletive is deemed profane or not. Making it so that you aren't upset enough to use an invective, even if it is something like 'freakin' or 'nuts' or 'poop'. Because then, you really aren't just avoiding use of bad words, but in reality are still wishing to use profanity, but are censoring yourself based on a preconceived notion that certain words are somehow 'bad'. When in reality someone at some point in history determined that these words should be deemed as such. I say, until you can remove yourself from situations that would cause stress enough to use any word in explecatively, you shouldn't limit yourself by removing these 'profane' words from your lexicon.

That being said...Go Fuck Yourself! :)

Things Not to Freak Out About

I'm guessing that 2008 really shouldn't be started by spending an ample amount of time checking out the following website which is sure to give me nightmares.

Happy 2008!

Movies to Wrap Up 2007
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: I Like Movies Too!

Welcome to the end of 2007. Who would have thought it would fly by so quickly? This year certainly had a lot of ups and downs, both personally and professionally. Did some things I didn't think I would do, didn't do some things that I should have and enjoyed almost all of it!

All in all, it was a pretty damn good year. Made some new friends and grew apart from some others. Went to LA, Vegas, Tampa, Chicago, Boston, Fort Myers, Dewey Beach, Baltimore, Atlanta, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

To wrap up 2007 (in addition to freezing at the Steelers/Ravens debacle) I have been watching several movies - some old, some new. I highly advise such an activity to clear out the cobwebs and get you ready for the new year. So, in no particular order here they are.

Scooby Doo
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Clueless
The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Supremacy
The Bourne Ultimatum
You Kill Me
Fifty Pills
Waitress

I also have to note the weirdest movie I saw in 2007 - Southland Tales. Please drink several six packs before viewing.

Happy New Year!

I think I've told most of the people that check out this site about this video and the rest of you have probably seen it, but I really just can't get enough of this. I'm a product of the 80's, what can I say...

Hmmm
Topic: Crap I Don't Understand

People fascinate and confound me at times. We spend our days attempting to connect with the people that we meet all the while hiding pieces of ourselves from the world at large. Why do we do this? Are we afraid of what people might think of us if they see who we truly are? Is that what causes us to censor ourselves? Even our families don't really know more than what we show them - or more so they view us based on their own preconcieved notions of who we are.  It's almost as if we have these characters or roles that we play based on the situation we find ourselves in. Is that the best way to go about living our lives?

A friend of mine recently had a near death experience and all of a sudden I'm hearing from him a lot more than I used to. What does that mean? Is he trying to connect with me or with the person that he thinks that I am? And what priorities have shifted in his life that have caused the attempt at reconnection?

No one wants to be alone in life, but when it comes down to it, are we ever really not alone? How can we let people into our lives if we are reserving part of ourselves. Will acting in this manner keep us alone? Or is reserving part of ourselves what allows us to connect wtih others? How much of ourselves can we share before other people begin to judge so harshly that they become unaccepting?

Office Etiquette
Topic: Hoyden's Hints

Dear Hoyden,

I've just accepted my first job since graduating from college and have been invited to a reception with some colleagues from work. I'm writing because I'm not really sure how to conduct myself in this type of environment. It's a party but kind of also a work function. What should I do?

Signed,
Confused in Corporate America

Dear CCA,

First off, you sound hot? Are you? This is important for a number of reasons. I'm not sure if you are a girl or a guy, but I can tell you right now, if you're hot, then it will make this situation easier since hot people can get away with a lot more than not hot people. You are obviously at least somewhat smart, though, hence you writing to me for advice. So, let's get on it. The advice I mean.

OK, if this is your first job, I'm guessing you don't have very much money right now (unless you're a trust fund baby, in which case, do what you want, you don't need this job.) So, you're low on cash and access to fancy alcohol and food, both of which will be appearing aplenty at any corporate event. My advice is to take advantage of this. Of course, you don't want to get too crazy and end up throwing undergarments over the side of the building you are on or vomiting on a senior VP; however, there is a way to avoid this AND have a good boozy time. Recruit a partner in crime who you will throw under the bus by making sure he/she is at least twice as drunk as you are, then no one will pay attention to what you are doing. Preferably this person should also be less attractive and in a more senior position than yourself. Don't go for the hot mailroom dude or the slutty (but hot) secretary. This will not bode well when you are trying to deflect attention from your drunken missteps.  Secondly, make sure to drink from several of the same drinks at the same time. If you strategically place these drinks around the reception, you can convincingly seem to only be drinking one drink the whole night as no one will ever see you with an empty. Feel free to bogart other colleagues drinks as well when they aren't paying attention. Their insistence that someone stole their drinks will only lead others to think they are too intoxicated to be drinking at all.

Finally, if you find yourself in a situation where you believe you are making a fool of yourself, don't stress about it, calmly walk over to the bar (or one of your strategically placed drinks) and get yourself another drink.

Hope this helps!

Hoyden
